For budget travellers in Vietnam rice forms part of a cheap meal. But to the millions of Vietnamese in this country rice is not just a food, rice equals life. Throughout history this tiny grain has shaped the country’s culture, economy and diet, where entire lifestyles are focused upon the growth and protection of this staple food.

No doubt you’ve encountered it in various forms — fried rice, boiled rice, sticky rice, rice paper, rice noodles, rice cakes, rice porridge, you may have even come across rice popcorn. And there’s a good possibility that you’ve drank it too. For most of us, life without rice is simply unthinkable, yet it is almost always taken for granted. But not this month as we highlight how this golden grain fuels a nation.
